Water Still on Levee at Smithland, City of Hickman Reopens

By Angela Hatton

Smithland, KY – In Livingston County, Emergency Manager David Koon says the water had gone down about a foot as of this morning. Koon says the levee at Smithland continues to hold, though volunteers are monitoring water leaking in through sandy ground. Emergency officials are still not letting anyone into the downtown area of the city. Koon expects it will be another week before residents can return to Smithland. He says some roads in Ledbetter are clearing off, and people will soon be able to return to check the damage to their homes. Water has not cleared from any major roads in Livingston County. The city of Hickman and the lower areas around it are open to the public. Fulton County officials say only Sutton and Sycamore roads and the levee remain restricted. City Manager Larry Myatt says more than 250 people are returning to their homes. He says so far, no one has reported any structural damage. The Kentucky National Guard continues to assist emergency officials with levees and law enforcement.
