Lexington Herald-Leader Layoffs

By Gabe Bullard

Louisville, KY – Fifteen jobs will be cut at the Lexington Herald-Leader, which is owned by the Sacramento-based McClatchy Company. Four of the positions are vacant, and of the remaining 11, some employees will be offered buyouts while others will have no choice in the matter. Publisher Tim Kelly says the newspaper is a business and the cuts are necessary to keep costs in line with revenue.

"All the newspapers of McClatchy are profitable. We have our revenues are running behind last year, and therefore we have to adjust the expense to address the advertising revenue underages."

Kelly declined to say how much money the cuts will save, though layoffs have occurred at the paper since 2008. Employees have until Monday morning to respond to buyout offers.
