Group Wants Kentucky to Issue Confederate License Plate

By Associated Press

Frankfort, KY – Civil rights advocates and the Sons of Confederate Veterans are drawing battle lines over approval for a Kentucky vehicle license plate displaying images of the Confederate flag and Kentucky native and Confederate president Jefferson Davis. The Tennessee-based SCV would be able to raise money with the plates. A spokesman for the group's Kentucky division says the plate would also educate the public about the group's existence and promote membership. But Democratic state Senator Gerald Neal says the symbolism promotes ideology that needs to be left behind. And the leader of the Louisville branch of the NAACP, Raoul Cunningham, says his group may consider a legal challenge. Groups applying for special plates have to receive approval for the design and collect 900 prepaid orders within two years.
