Public Meeting Set on Problem of Asian Carp in Kentucky

By Associated Press

Gilbertsville, KY – State officials say the growing problem with Asian carp in Kentucky water ways is prompting a public meeting to talk about ways to counter it. The public meeting is set for 7 P-M May 31st at the Kentucky Dam Village Convention Center in Gilbertsville. Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources officials say the invasive Asian carp can out-compete native fish species for food. The agency says bighead carp and the silver carp have infiltrated larges stretches of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, as well as the Kentucky and Barkley lakes. Officials say commercial fishing and potential markets may have the greatest potential for getting rid of large quantities of the fish.
