Lower Ohio River Swelling From Northern Rains

By Jacque Day

Cairo, Ill. – Heavy rains to the north over the past several days will bring some slight to moderate flood conditions to the lower Ohio River this week. But National Weather Service officials say the waters are expected to go just above flood stage in some places, and that the swelling is "nothing out of the ordinary." The river is expected to rise slightly from the Brookport Dam down to Cairo. This afternoon the water levels at Cairo had reached nearly 46 feet. Flood stage is 40 feet. The river is expected to near 47.5 feet by Thursday. The river is also slightly above flood stage at Grand Chain Dam.
