Frankfort, KY – Showcasing Kentucky's rich cultural heritage is the purpose of a statewide initiative announced in Frankfort. Kentucky Public Radio's Tony McVeigh has details of the program.
The idea is to bring more attention to cultural districts scattered across the commonwealth. Cultural districts include amenities like museums, theatres, historic sites, even farmers' markets. The overall goal of highlighting these areas, says Gov. Steve Beshear, is to attract visitors.
"The cultural district certification program is designed to showcase each community's unique character and assets. And it can be effectively developed in small, rural areas, as well as large, urban communities."
The Kentucky Arts Council is urging communities to apply for cultural district certification. The council believes such recognition will help enhance tourism, marketing and economic activity. July 1st is the deadline for filing a letter of intent to participate in the program.
