Heat Good for Crops, Bad for Livestock

By Angela Hatton / Stu Johnson

Elkton, KY – It's the beginning of June but the thermometer reads like a day in mid July. Todd County Extension Agent Curt Judy says hot weather this early in the season may stress young tobacco plants, but right now farmers aren't complaining.

"We've coming off this real wet period. Even though it's hot right now, people are happy to have-- to get in the field, get things done they haven't been able to get done through April and May so far."

Judy says the 90 degree weather could make trouble for livestock. Cattle may still have thicker coats due to the cold, wet spring. He says milk production will go down as cows spend energy cooling off.
