Frankfort, KY – The domestic electricity grid needs additional protection from cyber and other attacks. That's the view of Kentucky 1st District U.S. Congressman Ed Whitfield who serves on the House Energy and Commerce Committee. The Republican lawmaker says a cyber attack in February called the Night Dragon did breech computers used by energy and petro-chemical companies, even though it wasn't very sophisticated.
"Beyond potential cyber attacks, the power system remains exposed to physical vulnerabilities and threats including: direct terrorist attacks, weapons that can create an electro magnetic pulse, and geo-magnetic storms," says Whitfield.
Whitfield made his comments at an energy subcommittee meeting on cyber security earlier this week.
