Farmers Markets Slowly Opening for Season

By Angela hatton

Paducah, KY – Farmers markets are opening across the region, but vendors don't have much to sell yet. Heavy rain early in the season set many growers back. Paducah city spokesperson Pam Spencer says the downtown pavilion has room for 20 booths, but only a handful are out. According to the County Extension Office, farmers markets in Hopkins County have delayed opening because few growers have enough produce to sell. Calloway County's farmers market is open, but two weeks behind schedule. Ag Agent Todd Powell says vendors are light on produce, but beef, eggs, and jams are available. Hopkinsville is an exception to the trend. Downtown Renaissance Director Holly Boggess says the number of booths is on par for this time of year, and sales are on the rise.
