Frankfort, KY – New restrictions regarding misdemeanor offenses for law enforcement throughout Kentucky began yesterday. Police are being told to refrain from arresting individuals for misdemeanor offenses, and to issue citations instead. The new laws are intended to focus more state resources on DUI, violent and felony drug crimes while confining less serious offenses to fines and restrictions that do not include incarceration. Calloway County Chief Sherriff's Deputy Clayton Hendricks tells the Murray Ledger and Times while everyone is aware of the new guidelines, not everyone likes them. The effort is expected to save the state around $420 million dollars over the next ten years.
