Paducah's Floodwall Performed Well

By Gary Pitts

Paducah, KY – In spite of this spring's severe weather conditions, City Engineer Rick Murphy says Paducah's floodwall was a success. Last night, Murphy provided city commissioners with an overview of areas protected by the wall. Between January 1st and May 31st, 2011, Paducah received over 38 inches of rain, well over the more than 33 inches recorded during the same period in 1937. Murphy went on to say that regardless of weather, the floodwall, combined with a system of reservoirs, successfully protected an estimated one point two billion dollars in assets this year. Mayor Bill Paxton says he thinks Paducah is a poster child for how a floodwall is supposed to be run.
