New Fireworks Law Not a Concern for KSP

By Angela Hatton

Hickory, KY – Kentucky's new fireworks law means celebrators won't have to go out of state to buy fireworks for Independence Day weekend. Kentucky State Police Spokesman Dean Patterson says many of the old fireworks laws weren't heavily enforced, and the changes won't affect standard operating procedures at KSP's posts.

"The public probably doesn't know that the laws have changed really, a lot of the public probably doesn't. So that's probably not going to change the amount of calls that we receive, but, and even then, we probably still will respond to a lot of those just to make sure that what they have is still within the legal requirement."

New regulation allows Kentuckians to purchase Class C fireworks, which include roman candles and firecrackers. Patterson encourages people to use caution when lighting fireworks. He advises people to stay far away from buildings, and keep a water source nearby in case something catches on fire.
