Frankfort, KY – The enlarged arsenal of fireworks now available in Kentucky holds much appeal to children. Fireworks stands can now sell bottle rockets, roman candles and similar flying fireworks. Zenia Robinson is a staff nurse with the Safe Kids Fayette County organization. While many kids will want to try out new fireworks this weekend, Robinson says keep those works.
"I think the biggest thing is the supervision. Keep and eye on your kids. Watch out what they are handling. Where they are standing," said Robinson.
It's not just the expected increase in fireworks which is concerning health officials. Robinson says just being out late with lots of distractions all around can create certain risks.
"And some of those accidents and injuries could also be related to not just the fireworks themselves, but other things that can happen to little children left un-attended. You know, traffic related stuff."
Robinson says even a simple handheld sparkler poses risks. She says sparklers account for up to one third of injuries in children under five.
