Louisville, KY – University of Louisville medical school officials insist women's reproductive health will not be compromised in the merger of U of L Hospital, Jewish Hospital and Catholic Health Initiatives. There are concerns vasectomies, stem cell research and procedures the Catholic Church disapproves of would no longer be available. Medical school Dean Edward Halperin says $15 million will be set aside in the merger for U of L, and that money will go to either build or renovate facilities to provide potentially-banned services.
"We will provide that service. Now if, folks, I could tell you, 'Here is exactly the room that I'm going to show you it's going to be done' today, I would do that. The message we wish to convey is we're aware of this issue. We've been working on it. Nine out of the ten things on the list have been resolved and we will resolve this."
That list also includes abortions and curriculum on reproductive health. Halperin declined to say how those issues were resolved or how any others might be, but says he's studied the matter extensively.
