Soldiers May Return Home, 160 Years Later

By Gary Pitts/Clarksville Leaf-Chronicle

Clarksville, TN – Archaeologists in Mexico have found what they believe to be the remains of Tennessee volunteer soldiers. They discovered the remains during a construction project near where historians believe the Battle of Monterrey was fought during the Mexican-American War. Belief that the soldiers are Tennessee volunteers is based on historic records detailing the fatality rates of the frontline 1st Tennessee unit called the "Bloody First." The bloody first was commanded by Fort Campbell's namesake, Col. William Bowen Campbell. The Clarksville Leaf-Chronicle reports historians and veterans are making efforts to positively identify remains as US soldiers, and have them brought back to the states.
