Gov. Beshear Visits Soldiers in Iraq

By KPR

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky soldiers serving in Iraq are getting a thank you from their commander-in-chief back home. Governor Steve Beshear is on a surprise trip to Iraq and has met this week with troops from fort Campbell, Fort Knox, and the Kentucky National Guard. In a phone interview from Kuwait the governor talked about how surreal it is to be on the ground in Iraq.

"The reality doesn't hit you until things like this morning when we got ready to board some of the helicopters to go to different places. We were issued body armor, and kevlar helmets for protection. You know, that's when it really hits home for you, that these folks here are in harms way everyday."

The Governor says he's also impressed by the soldiers working in 125-degree heat with no complaints. Beshear is traveling with the governors of Tennessee, Nevada, and Utah. He expects to return to Kentucky Friday evening, just in time for Saturday's Fancy Farm Picnic.
