Frankfort, KY – Kentucky's Council on Post-Secondary Education is investigating the possibility of creating a stand alone, virtual university so people can pursue degrees entirely online. That's what Council President Bob King told members of the Kentucky General Assembly's Education Committee this week. King says there are challenges to the process. First, he notes, the university would have to offer convenient access
"Being available 24-7 is really important. Second, having a faculty that is really dedicated not to traditional students who are resident on a campus and coming in, and meeting the particular needs of adults is also important."
In addition, King says, there would have to be a method of determining how credits from other institutions would be transferred. He also says non-traditional students attending the virtual university might need a different kind of loan program, one designed more for working adults. King expects to have some recommendations for lawmakers within a year.
