Morehead, KY – The coordinator of the Rowan County farmers market says an extremely wet spring and humid summer have been tough on local farmers, but some have managed to put out a decent crop, anyway.
Darrell Doyle says his corn, soybeans and tobacco turned out pretty well this season, even though they were planted late. He says farmers have just tried to cope with the situation, as best they can.
Doyle says farmers are hoping that the lousy weather so far this year will minimize the chances of an early frost.
Even farmers who've managed to put out a fairly good crop this year are struggling to turn a profit says another Rowan farmer selling produce this week at the farmers' market.
Tracy Donathan says that's because they've had to wage a simultaneous battle against Mother Nature and rising production costs. The wet spring forced the late planting of many crops and that'll likely mean lower yields.
