Mayor Quits Amid Spat with Chief

By Todd Hatton/Paducah Sun

Brookport, IL – Brookport, Illinois Mayor Judy Askew says she'll resign after a dispute at Tuesday's meeting with the city council and new chief of police. Askew says aldermen denied her recognition of part-time police officers who wanted to address grievances against Chief Nheema Rodriguez-Cornelius. Askew objected and announced her resignation. The Paducah Sun reports the dispute stems from an interview Rodriquez-Cornelius gave Sunday in which she says she worked all shifts by herself since she was hired July 21st. Brookport employs three part-time officers who weren't scheduled to work that week, and who weren't called in. Askew says she invited the officers and the chief to the closed meeting to discuss the situation, but according to Alderman Edgar Martin, the invitation was out of order. Askew says she feels betrayed by Rodriguez-Cornelius and plans to request her resignation as well.
