US Education Secretary Approves of Tennessee Direction

By Associated Press

Nashville, TN – US Education Secretary Arne Duncan expressed approval yesterday for education reforms in Tennessee. Duncan attended a round table meeting with Gov Bill Haslam and State Education Commisioner Kevin Huffman to discuss the direction of education changes. He says he is encouraged by recent efforts to "take on tough issues". Tennessee officials are attempting to obtain a waiver on No Child Left Behind standards. The Clarksville Leaf-Chronicle reports the state is currently at a 41 percent math proficiency rate, and a 48.5 percent reading rate. Under NCLB guidelines, those numbers would need to increase to 100 percent proficiency by 2014.
