Bird's Point Levee Reconstruction Plans Anger Local Farmers

By Drew Adams

Murray, KY – Residents of southeastern Missouri have expressed worry over the Army Corps of Engineer's plans to rebuild the Birds Point Levee. The Corps recently announced plans to rebuild the levee to 51 feet, 11 feet shorter than its original height when it was breached intentionally last spring. Nearly 200 farmers attended a meeting in New Madrid Monday to protest the Corps' plans and ask that the levee be restored to its previous height of 62 feet. Among other topics discussed in the meeting were fears of future floods, an inability to procure insurance for farmland, and worries that the levee will not be reconstructed before more heavy rains visit the region.
