Lexington, KY – The number of Kentucky high school graduates meeting benchmarks for college readiness is improving, but in small increments. Brenna Angel has the latest on statewide ACT scores.
This year's graduating seniors at Kentucky public schools scored an average ACT composite score of 19.2, up slightly from 2010 data. ACT is a college entrance exam that tests four subject areas. A perfect score is 36.
"The percentage of students meeting benchmarks in English, math, reading, and science - and all four for that matter - is moving upwards. The optimism is tempered by the fact that there's a significant proportion of students who are being left behind if you will, not meeting any benchmarks."
ACT Interim President Jon Erickson says the scores are an indicator of how likely a student will pass an entry-level college course. 14 percent of Kentucky graduates were college ready in all four subject areas, while 38 percent did not meet a single subject benchmark.
