Stumbo Calls on Medical Board to Better Police MDs

By Associated Press

Frankfort, KY – House Speaker Greg Stumbo is calling on the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure to improve its oversight of the state's doctors to ensure that they aren't overprescribing painkillers. The Prestonsburg Democrat said Tuesday that he believes the licensure board can do a better job of ensuring that doctors who overprescribe are held accountable. Kentucky has been trying to curb widespread abuse of prescription abuse, particularly painkillers. Stumbo said efforts to stop the importation of pills into Kentucky from Florida, Ohio and other states has led to people seeking painkillers from in-state physicians. Licensure board Executive Director Bill Schmidt said he will take Stumbo's concerns to his members in a meeting next month.
