Murray, KY – A Reidland teenager was honored this weekend for saving his grandparents from drowning. In July 2010, 16 year old Avery Yates was canoeing in the Current River with his grandparents when their canoe capsized. Yates assisted his grandmother to safety and returned to save his grandfather who was pinned against a tree. Yates, a longtime member of the Civil Air Patrol, was awarded with the Silver Medal of Valor during that group's National conference in Louisville. The Silver Medal of Valor is the Civil Air Patrol's highest honor and has been awarded only 130 times in the group's 70 year history.
