Murray, KY – Republican attorney general candidate Todd P'Pool says the government has overreached in its inspection and regulation of Kentucky coal mines. In an interview with cn|2 Pure Politics, the Hopkins County Attorney criticized the Mine Safety and Health Administration's focus on the mines, saying,
"I think when a 20-year-old MSHA inspector is following around a 25 or 30-year veteran underground, it's gone too far."
P'Pool also said that MSHA and other agencies have removed the need for the United Mine Workers of America in Kentucky. He says that while the union was useful in the past, better safety standards and higher wages have reduced the role of the union in the Commonwealth. P'Pool faces Democratic incumbent Attorney General Jack Conway in the November election.
