Clarksville Mayor and City Council Clash Over Mayoral Voting Rights

By Drew Adams

Murray, KY – Clarksville, Tennessee's Mayor and City Council are at odds over the Mayors' right to vote in council proceedings. The Council proposed an ordinance yesterday (Thursday) that would force the Mayor to vote on issues at the same time as the council. At present, Mayor Kim McMillan may wait until all votes have been cast before casting her own. Council members have been at odds with the practice because mayors have used this ability to force a tie. The majority of the council feels prefers blind balloting, with all voting members unable to see others' votes until results are tallied. The measure is scheduled to come to the floor during next week's regular session.
