Jail Garden Feeds Community

By Drew Adams

Murray, KY – Henderson County Jailer Ron Herrington says inmates planting and harvesting from a jail garden have saved about $40,000 and produced 18 tons of vegetables this year. Herrington says about 3 tons have been donated to the Salvation Army, while the rest have gone to feeding inmates. The garden started out a decade ago as 50 tomato plants, but has grown into a 3.5 acre truck farm made up of several crops. Plantings are alternated so that fresh vegetables come to term throughout the season. Herrington says the garden may be enlarged next year as the cost of vegetables rises.
