Tenn. Supreme Court Considers Bidding System

By Associated Press

Nashville, TN – The Tennessee Supreme Court may have lawyers bid on representing the poor because of a growing demand for tax payer funded representation. The plan calls for the Administrative Office of the Courts to solicit bids to represent indigent persons for a fixed fee. Former President of the Tennessee Association of Criminal Defense tells The Tennessean while the aim is to contain costs, the result could be compromised quality of representation. The current system requires a judge to appoint attorneys to represent those who cannot afford one of their own.
