Murray, KY – Memorial Services and remembrances are planned across the nation to commemorate 10 years since the 9/11 terrorists attacks. Caldwell County citizens will remember 9/11 with a new memorial planned and funded by an area teenager.
Caldwell County High School Senior Dakota Young says the idea to build a memorial came to him while driving home from school one day. The 17-year-old drafted a sketch of the monument and met with Mayor Gale Cherry to have the project approved. Cherry agreed. With the approval of the city and a cost estimate from Princeton Memorials all Young needed was money.
"I raised a little over $5,000. I had a letter outlining what I wanted to do with the project. I had a few sketches for possible donors to look at. I went around town and started talking to business owners and other prominent members of the community. They just seemed to be really supportive of the project and the money just came in."
Young says the monument includes miniature replicas of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. He says officials will hold a public unveiling ceremony at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon.
