A Southern Illinois charity group is appealing a judge's decision to keep the group from determining placement of children based on marital status. Catholic Charities recently declined to recognize Illinois' civil unions law. The charity also refused to place foster children with unmarried couples. In response Illinois has moved to cancel contracts with Catholic Charities totaling $30 million. If the court's decision is upheld, foster families would have to seek out other agencies.
