Quinn to Focus on Scholarships in Veto Session

By Associated Press

Springfield, IL – Illinois Governor Pat Quinn says he plans to focus on eliminating state-university scholarships given by legislators in the next legislative session. Quinn used his amendatory veto power earlier this year to compel lawmakers to make a decision about the legislative perk. He says leaders from both parties should push their members to end the scholarships which have long been a source of ethical and sometimes legal concern. Lawmakers are allowed to give scholarships to anyone living in their districts. The concern is that many go to students with ties to campaign contributors. The next legislative session begins late this month.
