Florida Fueling Kentucky's Pill Problem

By Todd Hatton

Murray, KY – The Louisville Courier-Journal says a majority of Kentucky's illicit pain pills are coming from Florida, where many doctors indiscriminately dole out prescriptions for such drugs as oxycodone and Xanax. Kentuckians are making the 17-hour drive to Broward County in Florida, paying $4 each for 200 or more pills, enough, according to the Courier-Journal, to feed their addiction and sell some on the street. Former Broward pain clinic receptionist Bobbie Linkhorn says Kentuckians were her number one customers, telling the newspaper they came in "truckloads." Florida officials have recently passed new laws that forbid felons from owning clinics, with tighter rules on prescriptions and higher penalties for overprescribing doctors. But anti-drug activists and officials worry they don't go far enough.
