Murray, KY – Kentucky optometrists have continued their generosity toward Commonwealth politicians, contributing nearly $150,000 to the two main gubernatorial candidates. Donor reports filed with the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance show optometrists contributed another $36,000 to attorney general, state auditor, secretary of state and agriculture commissioner candidates. Their political contributions made news earlier this year when lawmakers quickly passed a bill allowing them to perform some types of laser surgeries traditionally performed only by ophthalmologists. Kentucky Optometric Association executive director Darlene Eakin says optometrists have a longstanding history of supporting political candidates financially and of being active in the political process. They've given nearly $90,000 to Governor Steve Beshear and nearly $60,000 to his Republican challenger David Williams since the race started last year.
