Democrats File Measure to Repeal Voter ID law

By Todd Hatton

Murray, KY – Two Tennessee Democratic leaders say they've filed legislation to repeal a new law requiring photo ID to vote in that state. Senate Democratic Chairman Lowe Finney and House Democratic Chairman Mike Turner say it threatens to disenfranchise over a hundred thousand Tennesseans. The law requires voters to show a state or federal photo ID to vote and several groups have opposed the measure. The state estimates 126,000 registered voters don't have current driver's licenses with photos on them. Finney says they have a duty as lawmakers to protect the ballot box, but they also have a duty to protect citizens' ability to vote. The law goes into effect next year.
