US House Speaker Talks Jobs, Economy in Kentucky

By Todd Hatton

Murray, KY – Louisville Democratic congressman John Yarmuth says despite Republican U.S. House Speaker John Boehner's call for political compromise on economic issues, the GOP refuses back down on policy. Yarmuth told reporters Monday after Boehner spoke at the University of Louisville that congressional Republicans have refused to, in his words, "give up one inch on any policy matter." Boehner was in Louisville speaking as part of the fall lecture series at the university's McConnell Center for political science students. Yarmuth is one of only two Democrats in the Kentucky congressional delegation. He represents the 3rd District, which include Louisville. Boehner, who represents Ohio's 8th District, spoke to about 800 people at the event. He cited several areas of agreement between Republicans and Democrats, including recently passed free trade pacts.
