Springfield, IL – After this summer's drought and excessive heat, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has declared 44 Illinois counties, including Massac, Johnson, and Pope, natural disaster areas. Farmers and ranchers in another 33 counties also qualify for assistance because they are contiguous to the affected areas. The declaration means low-interest emergency loans are available to help cover part of actual losses. Farmers in eligible counties have eight months from October 31 to apply.
