Carbondale, IL – Southern Illinois University Carbondale administrators say classes continue as scheduled today as tenured and tenure track faculty are now on strike. Talks toward a new contract broke down late last night. SIUC Faculty Association Spokesman Dave Johnson says while he's not sure how long the strike will last.
"It will last until we get a tentative agreement. It will last no longer than it has to but it will last long enough to get us an agreement that's in the best interest of SIUC for the long term."
Issues still on the table include distance learning, shared governance and job security. School Chancellor Rita Cheng says she's disappointed that talks broke down with the Faculty Association, but until an agreement can be reached, classes will continue with substitute faculty.
