Murray, KY – Kentucky First District State Senator Ken Winters is in the planning stages of a bill to let parents enroll their children in school districts where they commute to work. He says the current system allows no choice for parents if they work in another town and complicates child care before and after school.. Winters says for many of these parents, it would be much more convenient if their children were allowed to attend school in the district where they work. And thinks any issues involved with this could be worked out.
"The resident district would not be responsible for transportation. They wouldn't have to relinquish the capital outlay money they get on behalf of that student. And we might even look at part of the SEEK formula staying with the resident district in order to make sure that everybody's comfortable with it. But what an asset that would provide to moms and dads."
Winters says this bill isn't complete, but hopes to have more on it during the upcoming legislative session. He spoke on various education issues at a Kentucky Youth Advocates "Step Up for Kids" summit earlier today (yesterday) in Murray.
