Murray, KY – The Dorena-Hickman ferry will be out of service for the near future. The ferry boat is being sent to St. Louis for new engines. The replacement is being funded by a federal grant meant to improve the service's reliability. The ferry serves people who live near the Kentucky/Missouri border. The 1.5 mile Mississippi River crossing saves locals a one-way drive of 85 miles to Cairo, Illinois in order to cross the river. Officials expect the ferry to be back in service at the turn of the New Year.
