Federal Meth Lab Cleanup Funding Restored

By Drew Adams

Murray, KY – The war on methamphetamine has gotten some support from Congress in the form of millions of dollars to clean up the toxic waste generated by clandestine methamphetamine labs. President Obama signed a wide-ranging appropriations bill Friday that included the restoration of $12.5 million for meth lab cleanup. Funding for meth lab cleanup throughout the region has been waning since February, when funding was not renewed for the 2011 year. The program provided $19.2 million for meth lab cleanup in 2010. An Associated Press investigation earlier in the year found without federal cleanup money, many local police and sheriff's departments were far less likely to seek out labs they couldn't afford to clean up.
