Kentucky Considers Wage Theft Laws

By Devin Katayama/Gary Pitts

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky leaders and advocacy groups will meet tomorrow night to present and hear testimony against wage theft in the commonwealth. Wage theft is the underpayment or non-payment of workers' wages. National Employment Law Project spokesperson Rebecca Smith says wage theft is difficult to enforce because many jurisdictions lack resources. She says most states have criminal penalties for theft of services,' but wage violations are more frequently punished in civil court. Officials say the idea behind tomorrow's meeting is to give local and state governments the tools they need to enact new laws to combat the problem.
