Murray, KY – The head of Kentucky's Office of Mine Safety and Licensing is retiring at the end of the year. Johnny Greene is the second ranking mine industry regulator to leave Governor Steve Beshear's administration in recent days. Commissioner of the Department for Natural Resources Carl Campbell was fired from his job last week by Energy and Environment Secretary Len Peters. Campbell had oversight of mine safety, licensing, permits, abandoned mine oversight, reclamation and enforcement. According to his termination letter, he was being dismissed "without cause." Peters says he tried to convince Greene to stay on in the job, saying miners couldn't have a stronger or more capable safety advocate.
