Frankfort, KY – State Representative Rocky Adkins says the redrawing of election districts in Kentucky next year poses some special difficulties for the general assembly. The Democrat House Majority Leader says lawmakers will try to keep the districts intact as much possible and attempt to ensure the new map can withstand legal challenges. However, Adkins says large population swings in the state are causing some problems.
"The challenge is the loss of population in rural areas of Kentucky and the growth of population in urban areas. So it makes it a tougher challenge for us in the rural areas of Kentucky than it does, really, in the urban areas."
Adkins says the Eastern and Western parts of the state have seen the greatest shifts as people move into centrally located urban areas. The state legislature is redrawing election districts to reflect the latest data from the 2010 census.
