Louisville, KY – Kentucky Congressman John Yarmuth has filed a bill seeking to overturn last year's Supreme Court decision which allows unlimited spending for corporations in elections. The Democrat's bill says that financial expenditures and contributions should not qualify as protected free speech under the First Amendment. Yarmuth's bill would also make Election Day a legal holiday and enable Congress to establish a public financing system that would serve as the sole funding for federal elections. Yarmuth says the court's January 2010 decision has opened the floodgates for corporate and special-interest influence on elections and in Washington.
