Owensboro, KY – Crews are set to begin clean-up work next month on a coal slurry and acid mine drainage that's polluting a creek in Muhlenberg County. The Kentucky Department for Natural Resources says a $3 million contract to clean the slurry was awarded last week to Pollard & Son Excavating LLC of Madisonville.
The Messenger-Inquirer reports cleanup is set to begin Jan. 3 and last through October at the Ebenezer Slurry, which is about 2 miles west of Drakesboro.
State officials say the project includes 45 acres of coal slurry and 16 acres of "highly acidic coarse refuse material" left at the site prior to the 1950s that has "severely degraded" water quality in the area.
