Two Dead After Boat Capsizes Near Smithland Lock & Dam

Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources via Facebook

Two Illinois men are dead after a boat the men were on capsized Thursday near Smithland Lock & Dam in Livingston County.

A statement from Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife spokesperson Kevin Kelley said a witness saw the men fishing from an 18-foot jon boat below the dam. The boat motored into flood control gate number three, next to concrete. The turbulent water passing through the gate caused the boat to crash against the concrete, subsequently causing the boat to overturn around 11:30 a.m. CT on Thursday. The statement said the witness tried to save the men before they fell into the water.

Crews recovered the body of 60-year-old Kenneth Duncan of West Frankfort, Illinois, on Thursday. Another statement from Kevin Kelley said a family member and search crews found the body of 48-year-old Christopher Shadowens, of Herrin, Illinois, around 2:45 p.m. CT on Friday near the dam. Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife conservation officers continue to investigate the incident.
