Gov. Andy Beshear has named an acting and interim commissioner of the Kentucky Board of Education following Thursday’s resignation of Commissioner Wayne Lewis.

Robin Kinney will serve as acting commissioner until December 18, at that point Kevin Brown will become the interim commissioner.

According to a release, Kinney, serves as an associate commissioner in the Office of Finance and Operations and Brown serves as general counsel for Jefferson County Public Schools.

"I'm honored to serve in this capacity until the board selects a new permanent commissioner,” Brown said. “KDE is an organization important to our state's educational system. I look forward to working alongside KDE staff to support schools and districts.”

Brown’s annual salary while serving as interim commissioner will be $200,000.

Former Commissioner Lewis was named interim commissioner of education in April 2018. In October 2018 the board chose to forego a national search and named Lewis as commissioner.

The board will soon begin a national search for a permanent commissioner. Neither Kinney or Brown will be considered for the position.
