Congressman James Comer Says Impeachment Vote 'Should Have Never Happened'

Congressman James Comer said Wednesday’s impeachment of President Donald Trump “should have never happened.”

Trump became the third president in U.S. history to be impeached. House lawmakers voted to impeach Trump for abuse of power in allegedly trying to get Ukrainian officials to investigate a political rival, former Vice President Joe Biden.

In a phone call Thursday, Comer said Democrats should have investigated Hunter Biden’s role as a board member of a Ukrainian energy company before moving ahead with impeachment.

“The fact that they never subpoenaed Hunter Biden to me made it even more partisan and gave it even less credibility,” Comer said.

Hunter Biden took the role as a board member when his father, Joe Biden, was vice president. Ukrainian officials have previously said they found no wrongdoing from the Bidens. Hunter Biden has also previously said serving on the board was “poor judgement” but that he didn’t do anything “improper” by serving on the board.

U.S. Congressman Adam Schiff, who led the initial impeachment inquiry against Trump, has said Democrats wouldn’t carry out “sham investigations” into Hunter Biden and Joe Biden that Trump allegedly wanted to conduct.

Comer also said he believes the impeachment of Trump is similar to former President Bill Clinton’s impeachment.

He said he believes Clinton’s impeachment process was partisan and led by Republicans. He also said Clinton’s impeachment backfired on the GOP as Clinton’s support in the polls increased. Comer said he believes a similar situation is happening with Trump, and that Democrats will be impacted negatively in the 2020 election from the impeachment.

“I think the American public are pretty frustrated with hyperpartisanship,” Comer said. “There are plenty of issues Congress needs to be working on. Impeaching President Trump because of a phone call with Ukraine is not one of them.”

Pelosi wouldn't say after the vote when she might submit the articles of impeachment to the Senate. The trial for President Trump in the Senate is expected to begin in January.
