Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron announced this week the commonwealth is part of an $84 million multistate settlement with American Honda Motor Co., Inc. and Honda of America Mfg., Inc. over allegations the companies concealed safety information.

Cameron joined the attorneys general of 48 states, territories and the District of Columbia in the settlement, a conclusion to state leaders alleging Honda hid information related to defects in the frontal airbag systems installed in certain Honda and Acura vehicles sold in the United States.

The settlement concludes what Cameron said was a multi-state investigation into Honda’s alleged failure to inform regulators and consumers that the frontal airbags posed a significant risk of rupture.

“Our Consumer Protection Division represents the interest of Kentuckians and fights on their behalf when there is a widespread product safety concern, like we’ve seen with the defective airbags in these vehicles,” said Cameron in a statement. “This multistate settlement ensures that product safety standards are strengthened going forward.”

Honda is paying the participating jurisdictions a total of $84,151,210.15. Kentucky will receive $1,420,697.65.

Owners of Honda or Acura vehicles should visit Honda’s airbag recall website here.
