KSP Investigating Death Of Suicidal Subject, Incident Involving Owensboro Police Dept.

Owensboro Police Department

Kentucky State Police Post 16-Henderson is investigating an incident involving Owensboro Police Department and a suicidal subject.

According to police reports, an OPD officer conducted a traffic stop Sunday morning on Parrish Avenue. The operator had an active warrant for his arrest. When the officer asked him to exit the vehicle, the suspect allegedly accelerated and dragged the officer.

After a short vehicle pursuit, police say, the suspect exited his vehicle with a pistol and fled on foot. He was observed walking on Walnut Street near Parrish Avenue with the pistol to his head. A responding OPD officer arrived on the scene and the suspect reportedly shot himself in the head.

Police reports indicate the OPD officer was sitting in his assigned patrol unit and discharged his weapon into the vehicle. It is unknown if the suspect was struck by the officer's trajectory.

The Daviess County Coroner pronounced the suspect deceased on-scene. The investigation is ongoing.

Another OPD officer was stabbed in the face Sunday during the arrest of 31-year-old Harold Sanders Junior. Sanders had an outstanding warrant and is being charged with attempted murder of a police officer, disorderly conduct of the second degree and resisting arrest. The officer sustained non-life threatening injuries.
